Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP), also known as Speech-Language Therapists or Speech-Language Clinicians are highly skilled professionals who are specialized in the ability to optimize an individual’s ability to communicate as well as to eat and swallow effectively. A wide range of individuals benefit from the provision of services from an SLP, including but not limited to those who possess developmental feeding, swallowing, language or articulation issues, school-aged children with a language disorder, adults who have suffered a stroke or have been in an accident as well as a member of the corporate community who is prepared to improve his/her communication skills.
DUTIES
- Assess adults and children with communication disorders, differences or swallowing difficulties.
- Prepare a written and detailed report confirming a diagnosis of a communication or swallowing disorder as well as goals of treatment
- Prepare and plan details of treatment.
- Provide treatment to a diverse group of adults and children with a range of diagnoses in either individual or group sessions
- Take data on progression or regression identified.
- Provide counseling to individuals who require therapy as well as their families.
- Consult with members of an educational and/or medical team, as well as other therapists.
- Attend and/or conduct team meetings with an educational and/or medical team.
- Promote public awareness of the professions and the body of work that SLPs are specialized in.
- Promote communication wellness programs in private family homes, schools, hospitals as well as corporations and places of employment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Useful CXC CSEC courses are English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and other Sciences.
- CXC CAPE passes in sciences as well as Psychology, Linguistics or Sociology will be an asset
- To become a qualified Speech-Language Pathologist in Trinidad and Tobago, one must possess:
- From the UK, a Bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology.
- From the USA and Canada, a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology; the Bachelor’s degree is gained first.
- Proof of at least 350 clinical hours in the field under a registered therapist.
- Review of academic coursework, clinical hours and experience by the Board responsible for certifying Speech-Language Pathologists in Trinidad and Tobago.
