What is COVID-19

COVID-19, previously called the Novel Coronavirus, is part of a family of viruses that includes the common cold, SARS and MERS.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), previously called the Novel Coronavirus, is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.

Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

Prevention is the most important action you can take to protect yourself and your family from getting COVID-19. The Ministry of Health urges the population to:

  • Wear a mask over your nose and mouth when you go out in public
  • Keep your distance from others (6 feet)
  • Stay home if you are ill
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Cough into a tissue or into the crook of your elbow
  • Sanitize hard surfaces (e.g. table tops, hand rails, door knobs and trolleys) as often as possible
