Epidemiologist

Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events (including disease), and the application of this study to the control of diseases and other health problems at the population level. Epidemiologists conduct research in order to determine the risk factors of a particular disease to a given population and ways of eliminating it.

DUTIES

  • Surveillance of current health problems and evaluation of new ones; identifies risk factors and control methods
  • Applies epidemiological concepts to planning and evaluating programmes and health care services
  • Disseminates technical information related to health trends within the country
  • Assists in training in epidemiological concepts
  • Conducts research on relevant topics related to epidemiology in terms of person, place and time
  • Advises on solutions to current epidemiological issues
  • Predicts the likelihood of outbreaks and trends of health-related states or events (including disease)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • CXC/ CAPE subjects in Biology, Chemistry and Physics are recommended.
  • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS)
  • Master's degree in Public Health with concentration in Epidemiology; or a Master's degree in Epidemiology
  • Knowledge in Statistical Methods is an asset.
