Entomology is the scientific study of insects. In Trinidad and Tobago, entomologists function within the Insect Vector Control Division.
DUTIES
- Plans and implements insect surveys and pest management programmes.
- Plans and implements malaria blood smearing surveys in high risk areas
- Investigates various types of prevention and control methods and insecticidal resistance tests for disease carrying insects such as Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes.
- Perform investigations and research on mosquitoes and other arthropods in Trinidad and Tobago.
- Perform investigations and research on disease carrying insects and pests that are not found locally but are present in the immediate environment.
- Studies the residual activities of insecticides and larvicides.
- Conducts environmental impact assessment.
- Monitors insect population with the aim of informing officials of outbreaks.
- Coordinates public awareness and education programmes.
QUALIFICATIONS
- CXC/ CAPE subjects in Biology, Chemistry and Physics are recommended.
- Bachelor and Postgraduate training in Zoology/ Biology with experience in Epidemiology/ Biostatistics/ Entomology/Toxicology.
- Certificate/Diploma in Human Resource Management or Geographic Information Systems will be an asset.
- Master of Science in Entomology with experience in Field Research Methodology and knowledge of modern insecticides and their formulation for use in control measures.
