Dry Season

Overview

The dry season in Trinidad and Tobago, which occurs during the months of January to May annually, is characterised by high temperatures and low humidity, which can result in a variety of health issues for the national population. 

Therefore, the Ministry of Health advises the population to take precautions to safeguard their health during the dry season.

Health Guidelines for the Dry Season

Stay Hydrated By:

  • Eating fruits and vegetables (At least 2-4 servings of fruits daily and eating vegetables with every meal)
  • Rethinking your drink - make water your first choice
  • Drinking at least 8 - 10 glasses of water, daily

Protect Yourself from the Heat By:

  • Avoiding strenuous exercise during the hottest times of the day (usually 10:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m.)
  • Staying indoors or in shaded areas, when possible
  • Taking frequent breaks while working outdoors.
  • Wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 and above

Take Precautions Against Saharan Dust By:

  • Staying indoors, when possible
  • Keeping your rescue inhaler with you at all times if you have chronic respiratory illnesses e.g. asthma
  • Taking extra precautions if you are at risk for respiratory issues such as wearing a face mask. These at risk groups include the elderly, persons with heart disease, persons who are asthmatic and children
