Anxiety is our body’s built-in reaction to stress. It can make us feel tense, nervous, or worried about things and events that haven’t even happened. It can even make us want to avoid certain situations. Have you ever experienced those nervous jitters right before a big test or speaking in front of a crowd? That’s anxiety in action!
Everyone feels anxious from time to time and it can sometimes be helpful, like when it warns us about danger but when anxious feelings don’t go away, happen without any particular reason or make it hard to cope with daily life it may be the sign of an anxiety disorder. When you have an anxiety disorder, you may experience excessive fear or worry about a specific situation or about a broad range of everyday situations.
What can I do if I’m struggling?
If you’re struggling with anxiety, don’t hesitate to talk to adults you trust about how you’re feeling. Reach out to a parent, teacher, or counsellor for support. Remember, you’re not alone in this, and there are caring adults ready to assist you in managing your anxiety and feeling better.
How can I help myself?
- Practice relaxation techniques: Try deep breathing, meditation, or some yoga to calm your mind and body. Consider exploring other relaxing activities like playing a musical instrument or learning to play the pan.
- Move your body: Exercise can seriously help reduce stress and lift your mood. It doesn’t have to be a marathon—walking or dancing to your favourite songs are great ways to get active.
- Do things you love: Whether it’s reading, listening to music, or hanging out with your pets, make sure to carve out time for activities that make you happy. Beyond your usual favourites, why not try something new? Starting a fun TikTok page, experimenting with nail art, or cooking a new recipe can be joyful and fulfilling.
